Mangalore, Dec 13: "To depict Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s contribution to the nation, his statue will be built in Gujarat which will be named as the ‘Statue of Unity’-the world’s largest statue. Hence prior to this, to mark the death anniversary of Sardhar Vallabhbhai Patel, the metal collection committee of Dakshina Kannada will be holding a marathon termed as ‘Run for Unity’ which will cover a distance of 2 km from Jyothi circle to Nehru Maidan on December 15 at 9 am," said MLC, Monappa Bhandary.
He was addressing the press meet here on Friday December 13.
The marathon will see more than 5000 people participating from the city. Certificates will be also provided for the runners. An estimate of 40 lac people will run simultaneously throughout the country. 35 lac people have already registered their names for the marathon.
This marathon is being held to unite the people of India in paying a tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai. Differently abled children will also be a part of this marathon.
"The metal tools used by farmers will be collected next year from January 15 to January 26 throughout the country. The metal obtained from this will be used to build up the statue," he added.
On this occasion Dr Y Bharath Shetty convener of Metal Collection Committee Dakshina Kannada, Capt Brijesh Chowta, Surendra Jeppu, Sujith were present.
