Mangalore, Dec 7: "It is really disgusting to see the ritual of 'Made Snana' being practised in the state of Basava, Kanaka, Buddha and Shishunala Sharif who preached equality, brotherhood and love among people. ‘Made Snana’ is a stain on the image of Karnataka. 'Purohithashahi' priests to quench their desire are suppressing the backward class people by making them roll over on plantain leaves of leftover meals, which is an insult to humankind and shame to Indian culture. Hence I severely condemn it," said Sri Basavaraja Devaru of Revana Siddeshwara Math, Dharwad.
He was addressing a day-long hunger strike organized by Karnataka Rajya Hindulida Vargagala Jagruta Vedike (R) against ‘Made Snana’, near DC's office here on Saturday December 7.
"Making backward class people roll on leftover meals doesn’t cure diseases; it symbolises the egoistic attitude of Brahmins. The people who roll on leftover meals are innocents who in the name of belief are suppressed and rendered helpless," he added.
He also said that those practising untouchabilty should be awarded capital punishment.
"The chief minister should intervene in this matter immediately and bring an ordnance to stop this inhuman act. The Kukke Subramanya temple incharge Nagaraju has been giving reckless statements about this issue, hence the chief minister should sack him immediately. Let all priests make their family members or themselves roll over leftover meals," he said.
Shivaramu, state president of Karnataka Rajya Hindulida Vargagala Jagruta Vedike said, "This is an inhuman practice being performed from several years. From past 4 years we have been strongly opposing this act; and once there was also an attack on me. It is a challenge to Indian society. This is suppressing the weaker class. We will not stop our revolution till the practice is banned. The government should intervene by bringing an ordinance. We will not stop our revolution till we get justice."
Sri Rachoti Shivacharya Swamiji of Bettadapura Mysore also expressed his views against Made Snana.
A K Bhandary, Jayanandha Devadiga, Muneer Katipalla, Ahmed Kandak, Yousif Bhaktiar, Vijay K, Shekar Beltangady, Monappa and others were present.
The hunger strike will be held till 5 pm.
