Mangalore: Police catch thief within an hour of theft, recover Rs 5.10 lac

Mangalore, Dec 6: In a commendable effort, the personnel of Pandeshwar police station on Friday December 6 nabbed a thief in just an hour after the crime took place.

The accused has been identified as Omkar Shetty (30), a resident of Savanur, Haveri.

Omkar allegedly stole a bag containing Rs 5.10 lac from Ayampady, a resident of Kannur, Kerala, who owns a sweet shop.

It is said that Ayampady used to visit Mangalore frequently. On Friday, at around 8.45 am, he was walking at Hampankatta with his brother after arriving by train from Kerala, when Omkar snatched his bag and fled.

Ayampady then approached the Pandeshwar police and lodged a complaint. The police swung into action and began a hunt for Omkar. As the crime had taken place near Hampankatta, the police searched the surrounding areas and found Omkar near the Clock Tower.

Upon questioning, Omkar admitted to have stolen the bag containing money from Ayampady.

Omkar works at a juice centre near Lady Goschen hospital and sleeps at Nehru Maidan, sources said.

Pandeshwar police inpector Dinakar Shetty, PSI (crime) Shivarudrappa, Prakash, Manikanta, Damodar and other police personnel were part of the operation.

    Really commendable job by Pandeshwar Police. Well done.Why the thief was roaming near the maidan after snatching 5 lakhs. May be he is not an experienced and a routine thief.

    Good catch by the cops, but it is evident the snatcher is an amateur and may not have realized that the bag would be filled with all cash or he would have vanished to some far off place in no time!!

    What Mr. Omkar Shetty has done is definitely wrong but after reading about his living conditions, some circumstances might have forced him to do so. He needs some counseling.

    Good work done by the police department. I think, it is better, in addition to the salary, some incentive or something like award should be given to those who were able to finish the work at the fastest period of time. This will boost the police department personnels. Here, two words are important 'success' and 'effectiveness'. The police department has successfully caught the culprit, but it has to be effective also, so that the culprit should not repeat the same and also give an awareness to the general public not to do harm to the public

    It was a commendable job by the Pandeshwar Police. Congrats!

    But sadly I have to mention that the woman police inside the police station is very rude, unfriendly and harass the youngsters who go there to make a police complain about - Original Certificate Lost' to apply for a duplicate certificate.
    The complainants don't deserve such behavior from Pandeshwar Police where as other police station officials are very friendly and cooperative to the complainants during the such distressful situation.

    This is not a complaint but a reminder to remain friendly and co-operate with any people who go there in distress like lost of important documents.

    Good job by police. Police acted very fast before the thief could leave Mangalore. That is why they were able catch him immediately.
