Mangalore: Police catch thief within an hour of theft, recover Rs 5.10 lac

Mangalore, Dec 6: In a commendable effort, the personnel of Pandeshwar police station on Friday December 6 nabbed a thief in just an hour after the crime took place.
The accused has been identified as Omkar Shetty (30), a resident of Savanur, Haveri.
Omkar allegedly stole a bag containing Rs 5.10 lac from Ayampady, a resident of Kannur, Kerala, who owns a sweet shop.
It is said that Ayampady used to visit Mangalore frequently. On Friday, at around 8.45 am, he was walking at Hampankatta with his brother after arriving by train from Kerala, when Omkar snatched his bag and fled.
Ayampady then approached the Pandeshwar police and lodged a complaint. The police swung into action and began a hunt for Omkar. As the crime had taken place near Hampankatta, the police searched the surrounding areas and found Omkar near the Clock Tower.
Upon questioning, Omkar admitted to have stolen the bag containing money from Ayampady.
Omkar works at a juice centre near Lady Goschen hospital and sleeps at Nehru Maidan, sources said.
Pandeshwar police inpector Dinakar Shetty, PSI (crime) Shivarudrappa, Prakash, Manikanta, Damodar and other police personnel were part of the operation.
