Udupi, Nov 27: The distressed family members of Ranjitha, who was allegedly stabbed to death by Yogesh on Wednesday November 27 morning, have demanded the arrest of the youth's entire family until he was arrested.
The youth's uncle Rajkumar was taken into custody later in the day.
Ranjitha (20) was allegedly stabbbed to death by Yogesh after she refused to reciprocate his feelings for her. Yogesh is said to have come to Ranjitha's friend's house in the neighbourhood while she was studying there and forced her to give him her consent. When she refused, he reportedly stabbed her and fled in a bicycle. Her friend had tried to intervene but in vain.
Ranjitha's family claimed that Yogesh had been troubling Ranjitha for the past one year and that two months ago, Ranjitha, her mother and Dalit leaders had even approached the DC and the SP with a complaint against him.
"Ranjitha had falled at the SP's feet begging for police protection from Yogesh. She could not even go to college in peace because of him.
The SP assured that he would take action and had instructed the Malpe police SI to do the needful," the family members said.
The Malpe SI had then called Yogesh, his brothers and uncle to the police station and issued a warning. "Yogesh's uncle Rajkumar had assured the police that he would take full responsibility for Yogesh's action and that he would send him away to Mangalore or Katapady. A written assurance was given that the Yogesh would not disturb the girl anymore," said the family.
However, on Tuesday November 26, Yogesh once again troubled the girl and the family informed the police, who came to the neighbourhood but could not find him anyway. The family also alleged that Yogesh's two sisters had supported him in his actions.
As Yogesh's uncle Rajkumar had taken responsibility for Yogesh's action earlier, the police have taken him into custody.
Ranjitha's family and members of Dalit Sangharsha Samiti have however refused to conduct her last rites until the entire family of Yogesh was arrested.
Speaking to daijiworld, SP Dr Boralingaiah said that the girl had come to him along with her family and he had assured of taking action, and had instructed the Malpe police accordingly.
"When the youth came with his uncle and brothers to the police station, they said that he was undergoing treatment for a psychiatric disorder in a hospital. The police had told them to take care of him and prevent him from doing any harm," the SP said.
"Yogesh would still be in Manipal. His mental condition is not stable," he said, adding that he would be arrested soon and he would convince the girl's family to conduct the last rites before that.
