Udupi, Nov 18: The five men accused in the gang-rape case of a Manipal University student were on Monday November 18 produced in the district court.
The prime accused Yogish, Anand and Hariprasad were brought from Shimoga jail under tight security. Yogish's brother Balachandra and Harisprasad's brother Harindra, who were arrested on charges of destroying evidence, were also produced.
The judge B M Angadi announced January 6, 2014 as the date for the victim to produce herself in the court, along with some of the 106 witnesses in the case.
Also, the judge asked the prosecution and the defence to produce their witnesses on January 7,8, 20 21, 22 27, 28 and 29.
Speaking to reporters, public prosecutor T S Jituri said that by January end, half of the total witnesses will give their statements, and if its not possible, new dates will be issued.
Defence counsel Purushottam Poojary said that till now the victim has not given any formal statement in the court, and until she does so, the case will not hold water.
To a query, he said the girl will have no choice but to produce herself in the court, and that the court will not go to her.
Yogish, Anand and Hariprasad were arrested after a week of intense search following the gang-rape of a Manipal University student from Kerala on June 20 this year. Balachandra and Harindra were arrested later for allegedly destroying evidence. The police filed a chargesheet against the accused on August 22.
