Mangalore, Apr 5: At the Total Sanitation Campaign Monitoring Committee meeting held here on Tuesday, April 4, Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat chief executive officer A M Kunjappa said that every house in the district will have a toilet by the end of March 2007. Steps have been initiated to reach this goal, he said.

A total of 70,084 families will be made aware of the importance of sanitation and will be asked to construct toilets. The Karnataka Water Supply Authority has released Rs 19 lac for the district for this purpose.

The Below Poverty Line (BPL) families who were given amount of Rs 500 for construction of toilets has now been raised to Rs 1,500, said Kunjappa. Further there is also a plan to offer funds without levying interest, he added.

The district is also a contender for the award announced by the Union Government for total sanitation. Details of the 24 gram panchayts will be sent to the government for the award of Rs 4 lac, Kunjappa said.
