Mangalore: Apr 2: A group of six contractors assaulted Mangalore City Commissioner Dr P Chandrappa on Saturday, April 1 in his office. These were reportedly miffed over contracts under the Nirmal Nagar Project not being given to them.
The incident took place when Dr Chandrappa had blacklisted a few contractors from applying for fresh tenders for garbage disposal work. The commissioner, who along with Barke SI Pavan Kumar went to rescue the health office, who was being attacked by the contractors, became the victim of the contractor’s ire himself.
On Saturday morning, a group of contractors gheraoed Chandrappa and shouted slogans against him and abused him before assaulting him. MCC Superintendent Jagannath Shetty and Health officer Manjayya Shetty too were assaulted by the mob.
T Sukumar Shetty, Abdul Salam, Naveenchandra Mada and M Prasad were later arrested by the police and cases of atrocity and assault on government officials have been booked against them at Barke station.
With four arrested and produced before court, two contractors, Guruprasad and Ganesh are absconding.
