Kundapur, Nov 8: A person is said to have attempted suicide after he was 'falsely' accused in a theft case and allegedly thrashed by a group as well as the police.
The victim is identified as Ganesh Hegde (26), presently residing in Yadadi Matyadi. The police officials brought the accused to the station and allegedly thrashed him, thus driving him to attempt suicide.
Ganesh was working in a 'shamiyana' shop belonging to Appu Poojary in Saibarkatte from the past one month. During his work, whenever needed, he used to take Appu Poojary’s bike. As he worked day and night for about two weeks during Navaratri, he asked for three days leave and it was granted.
As per Ganesh's statement, on November 2, he parked Appu’s Splendor bike in front of his shop and the same night, the bike went missing. On searching, Appu received information that his bike was spotted in Bidkalkatte area. Thereafter, along with his friends Santhosh and Ganesh, Appu went to Ganesh Hegde and enquired with him.
On November 5, a person named Sundar was caught with the bike. The same day, Appu’s car driver Manu went to Ganesh’s house and brought him to the shop as there was work. Appu then brought Sundar (who was caught with the bike) to the same place. He also told Ganesh that the bike thief was caught. Meanwhile, a group of people came towards Sundar and enquired with him whether Ganesh was behind the theft, to which Sundar said that Ganesh was not involved, said police sources.
Ganesh said that two days later, the miscreants plotted to clear the allegations against Sundar and hence they made Sundar say that Ganesh had given him the bike. Meanwhile, the miscreants who were close to Sundar, namely Ganesh Charlie, Sathish, driver Manu, Krishna and others attacked Ganesh and also threatened to kill him. Amongst them, Sathish tied Ganesh’s hands and legs with a rope and asked other members to attack him, it is learnt.
Appu Poojary then informed Kota police station and Ganesh was taken to the station where again, he was allegedly beaten up by police. Ganesh then tried to commit suicide and hence twice hit himself with a sickle found in the police station. But as the sickle was not sharp, the injury was not fatal. Ganesh also hit his right hand with the sickle, injuring his fingers.
Ganesh was rushed to Kota hospital and then later to Chinmayi hospital in Kundapur. Appu Poojary has assured to pay the hospital bills. Sadly though, no police officials have visited the hospital so far, Ganesh said.
