Bergamo (ITALY) Nov 7 (IANS/AKI): The president of the Italian region of Lombardy has demanded an investigation Thursday after an elderly man and his son died when a train collided with an ambulance in northern Italy.
"We will open an inquiry to establish who is responsible for this. We want to understand what happened," Roberto Maroni said.
The accident occurred at a level-crossing in Pontida province of Bergamo earlier in the day, which left the ambulance driver critically injured.
Umberto Pavesi, aged 79, and his son, Claudio, 49, were killed when the train hit the ambulance they were travelling in from a local nursing home.
Witnesses said the safety barrier was raised at the level crossing as the train approached. It was not immediately clear if this was due to a mechanical problem.
