NHRC takes on Bihar Police over abuse

New Delhi, Nov 1 (IANS): The National Human Rights Commission has issued a notice to Bihar Police over a published report that policemen thrashed a mentally challenged man, an official statement said Friday.

The notice was sent to the director general of police after a media report spoke of the assault by the Government Railway Police in Purnea. The commission has demanded an explanation within four weeks.

The victim, Gyanendra Choudhary, was reportedly injured while trying to cross a railway track. Police took him to a hospital but he escaped.

Police later traced him at a temple, and he was allegedly thrashed and dragged back to the hospital.
