Panaji, Mar 20: Raja Savai Veer Sadashiv Rajendra Basavling Wodeyar (72), Goa's last king who later came under the Portuguese feudal system, passed away on Sunday.
The mortal remains of Wodeyar were brought to Shiv Tirth palace, his residence in Nagueshi, Goa from Belgaum. He died at Belgaum, family sources disclosed.
He was the last King, who ruled Goa, and later sought asylum with Portuguese rulers.
"Wodeyar belongs to the dynasty of Saunda who ruled Karnataka and parts of Goa including Sanguem, Quepem, Canacona and Antruz talukas in 16th century,'' stated historian Prajal Sakhardande. They were also under suzerainty of Maratha and Maughal kingdoms.
"In 1763 when Hyder Ali attacked Saunda kingdom they sought asylum and protection from the Portuguese since 18th century," Sakhardande explained.
Wodeyar who passed away on Sunday was the last feudal subordianate of the Portuguese and continued staying at Shiv Tirth palace in Goa till his death.
His final rites would be performed on Monday, March 20 evening, family sources stated.
