Mangalore, Mar 17: A workshop ‘Towards a Participatory Approach to Mangalore’s Town Planning’, was held at the SDM Law College here on Thursday March 16.
Inaugurating the workshop, District and Sessions Judge G V Hegde said that the extensive developments have reached a stage of no return.
Head Quarters Assistant to DC A G Bhat, said that by June this year, the ward-level multi-purpose disaster management plan will be realized in all 60 wards of the Mangalore City Corporation, wherein the ward-level committees consisting of home guards, police, fire staff, NCC and others would deal with ward-wise problems of various disasters like earthquake, drought and flood.
A circular has been issued by the government to Gram Panchayat, Zilla Panchayat, PWD, and other organizations, to put into practice the building factors to resist earthquakes of high intensity, he added.
The Karnataka Municipal Act requires to be amended to enable the local bodies to take action, said B K Ravindra, principal, SDM Law College.
Also present were A Srinivas Rao, president, Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry, C D Pereira of Citizens for Mangalore Development and K Devaraj, principal, SDM College of Business Management.
