Karkala, Mar 16: One person was arrested for illegal transport of sandalwood at Kukkehalli reserve forest area on Tuesday March 14.
The staff of Hebri forest department raided the place after receiving a sure tip off about the illegal cutting and transporting of sandalwood trees from the reserve forest. The police arrested one Rajesh Ganiga, a resident of Hanehalli near Hebri and seized 3 sandalwood logs weighing 48 kgs.
The total value of the seized sandalwood has been estimated at Rs 48,000. In the meantime, two more accused Sitaram Shetty and Chandra Harijan, residents of Hanehalli have managed to escape. They have been absconding ever since.
The arrested Rajesh has already been produced before Udupi court which has remanded him for judicial custody.
The Hebri zonal forest officer Satish Baba Rai is investigating the case.
