Washington, Oct 12 (IANS): US President Barack Obama has congratulated the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) on being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, the White House said Friday.
The OPCW was awarded the 2013 Nobel peace prize Friday "for its extensive efforts to eliminate chemical weapons".
In a statement released by the White House, spokesman Jay Carney said that
The US strongly supports the OPCW, including its joint work with the UN, to ensure that chemical weapons stockpiles in Syria are placed under international control and ultimately destroyed, reported Xinhua citing the White House spokesperson Jay Carney.
Obama also called on all nations to work to bring an end to the conflict in Syria, and to support the OPCW's efforts to end chemical weapons in the world.
US Secretary of State John Kerry had also congratulated OPCW on the award earlier in the day.
