Sonia Gandhi on one-day visit to UP

Lucknow, Oct 8 (IANS): Congress president Sonia Gandhi will be on a one-day visit to her parliamentary constituency of Raebareli in Uttar Pradesh Tuesday.

She will be laying the foundation stone of an ambitious rail wheel manufacturing unit in Lalganj. The unit will come up within the coach manufacturing unit, already functioning in the region.

She will later address a public rally and meet party workers. She will also be laying the foundation stone of a city resource centre at the "Jalkal" premises on the canal road, Congress legislator Akhilesh Pratap Singh said.

While the rail wheel project is being jointly undertaken by the railways and the National Steel Corporation, the resource centre will be built by the central urban housing department.

The one-day visit of the UPA chairperson comes a day after her son and Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi visited Amethi for laying the foundation stone of a Rs.200 crore food processing unit.

The slew of new developmental projects, political observers say, was a sign of the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls in which the Congress will have to fight a strong anti-incumbency to retain its 2009 tally of 22 MPs.
