Mangalore, Mar 10: The foundation stone for a fish auction centre to be constructed by Metro Cash and Carry at South Wharf in Bunder here was laid on Thursday March 9, by B Nagaraj Shetty, minister for fisheries. Besides this auction centre, he also laid the foundation stone for the works relating to cleanliness and renovation of fishing port under ASIDE Scheme and drinking water and rest rooms for women.
Speaking on the occasion, Shetty said that the state government is planning to chalk out a special package for fishermen in the next budget. The deputy chief minister has been made aware about the problems confronted by fishermen. A meeting of all fishermen leaders will be held once a month to discuss their problems. Officials, who do not act towards the fishermen’s problems, will be sacked, he added.
Yogish Bhat, MLA, said that the port requires nearly Rs 70 crore to improve its infrastructure. He requested Nagaraj Shetty to complete the works worth Rs 35 crore in the next 20 months.
Metro Cash and Carry India director Michael Keelan said that the firm has undertaken to construct a modern fish auction centre in the city at a cost of Rs 57 lac.
