Railways to increase passenger fare, freight tariff by 2 percent

New Delhi, Oct 4 (PTI): Railways has decided to increase passenger fare and freight tariff by about 2 percent from next week to offset the financial burden arising out of increased input cost.

Railways is expected to mop up about Rs 1250 crore from the hike in the last six months of the current fiscal, sources in the ministry said. The suburban and non-surban fares would, however, remain untouched.

The decision on the fresh round of hike has been taken under the system of fuel adjustment component (FAC) about which an announcement was made in the 2011-12 rail budget.

Railways has taken into account the additional burden of 7.3 percent increase in diesel price and about 15 percent in electricity hike. While the fare of AC and sleeper class will be increased by about 2 percent, the freight rate will go up by 1.7 percent, as per the decision.

Railways has imposed 15 percent levy as the busy season charge on all commodities from October 1 and the FAC-linked revision is likely to take effect from October 10.

According to the budget proposal, the fuel component is segregated from tariff as FAC and the railways is expected to revise the passenger and freight tariff after every six months taking into account the input cost and the prevailing market condition.

I sincerely feel Railway fare need to be increased by 75-100%, With inflation being so high, we can not think of travelling from Mangalore to Mumbai in sleeper class @ Rs 383, this is very very low. Even Bus operators charge you Rs 1500 these days. It is not worth travelling @ cheap rate without any security. Hence I give the following suggestion,

    1) Increase the Sleeper class fare by 100%, 1 Tier, 2 Tier AC by 50%

    2) Give 50% discount to Senior Citizens, Handicapped & Children (Which means no increase for them)

    3) Increase the Safety and Hygiene to the maximum extent, give Highly Hygienic Food and Water

    4) Make a Hygienic Green Toilets

    5) Keep atleast ONE ARMED SECURITY Guard in each Compartment

    6) Install a Scanner for for Checking the Luggage bag, just like in Flight

    7) Install atleast 4-5 CC TV Cameras in each Boggie & in Entire Railway Station.

    8) Give Wi-Fi Connection in every Bogie

    9) Reserve 2-3 Compartment for Recreation purpose such as Cyber Cafe, Mini Theatre, Cafe Coffee Day, Video games with Joystic etc. where one can spend 2-3 hours by paying extra for these services.

    10) Improve the Plat form, Avoid Beggars inside the Railway station and in Rail

    11) Make a Good Resting and Clock room.

    12) Avoid scam in railway ticket booking, Each railway ticket must compulsory have Photo of the traveller printed in the Ticket itself, So keep a webcab at the ticket booking center, and give provision to upload photo in Online booking as well.

    13) Reserve one Boggie exclusively for Ladies.

    14) With Charges being increased give free snacks, soft drinks and News paper.

    15) In busy routes like Blore - Delhi, Blore -Mumbai, Mumbai-Delhi, start Point -Point train services.

I think in today's condition People want Safety and Services than saving money. Offcourse Due Discount can be considered for people like Below the poverty line, Children, Senior Citizens and Handicapped.

Increase in Railway passenger fare was long due.
During Lalu's time, even though Railway was making loss, his Bihar Brigade manipulated and showed huge profit, due to which many ongoing projects were inordinately delayed for lack of funds.
So increase in fare is now quite justifiable to bridge the huge deficit in Railway Budget.
Some people may criticize that this will increase inflation, but plus points are more than minus points in this case.
