Agra, Oct 4 (IANS): The Agra district authorities have imposed restrictions on Durga Puja celebrations as a fallout of the Muzaffarnagar violence.

Police officer Shalabh Mathur said according to the new guidelines, those who want to organise Durga Puja celebrations at public places will have to take prior permission.

"They will have to give complete details of the route of visarjan (idol immersion), mobile numbers of organisers and the anticipated crowd in the procession," he added

"Clearly, they are over-reacting and do not want to take any chances, but whether the guidelines would be implemented remains to be seen," said Hindutva activist Premendra Jain.

Nearly 50 people were killed and thousands displaced from their homes following last month's communal clashes in Muzaffarnagar.

Police said puja pandals would be under scanner. "There can be no disc jockeys. Disputed places will be out of bounds for the celebrations. Collection of funds forcibly and distribution of prasad or applying tika without consent shall not be permitted," said police.

Organisers have been advised to refrain from playing loud music or organising obscene dances.

The organisers would have to fill a bond at the police station, giving all details. A police officer will then investigate and give permission for the puja.

Meanwhile, despite the inclement weather due to night-long drizzle, puja preparations in colonies have started. "The Navratras begin Saturday and end Oct 13. Dussehra and Navami (ninth day of the fortnight in the Hindu lunar calendar) will be on the same day this year," said Acharya Madhukar Chaturvedi.

The nine days are considered auspicious by Hindus for purchasing houses or vehicles and launching business projects. Many faithfuls fast, eating only fruits or milk products.

Puja samagri (items) shops selling dupattas, chunris (both clothes), Durga idols, garlands, and shringar (decorative) items are doing brisk business.
