91 undocumented migrants detained in Puerto Rico

San Juan, Oct 4 (IANS/EFE): Puerto Rican authorities Thursday detained 91 undocumented migrants from Haiti and the Dominican Republic as they were trying to illegally enter the US commonwealth, police said.

The group was made up of 60 men, 27 women and a child, all Haitians, and three Dominicans, the Puerto Rico police said in a statement.

The undocumented migrants were travelling on a boat 12 metres long some 8 nautical miles southwest of the Desecheo islet located between Puerto Rico and the island of Hispaniola, which is shared by Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

Personnel from the US Coast Guard took charge of the migrants, who were found to be in good health, with an eye toward their deportation, police said.
