London, Oct 3 (IANS): A man who killed an elderly Indian-origin lady by hitting her with his car in a British city was sentenced to a one-year driving ban and one-year community work.
Usman Hussain, 39, of Manchester city, Wednesday admitted ar the Manchester Crown Court to causing 69-year-old Surinder Kaur Singh's death by careless driving, the Manchester Evening News reported.
He was ordered to complete 250 hours unpaid community work and pay 1,000 pounds in costs.
Hussain, who was at the wheel of a Renault Laguna, hit Singh Oct 31 last year as he reversed from a footpath on Chetham Hill Road in Manchester.
Singh was rushed to hospital but died a short while later.
“A moment of carelessness has cost Surinder her life and consequently devastated her family,” a police official was quoted as saying.
“Usman Hussain himself is not a bad man but he too has to live with the consequences of his actions; he has her death on his conscience and a criminal record,” the official added.
