Mangalore, Oct 1: The Students Association of Civil Engineering Department (Nirman) of St Joseph Engineering College, Vamanjoor, here, was recently inaugurated by Er Rajendra Kalbavi, director, Nirmiti Kendra, NITK Suratkal.
Staff coordinator of Student Association Akshatha Shetty, escorted the dignitaries to the dais. Dr Sujatha Unnikrishan, HOD, department of civil engineering, welcomed the dignitaries to the inaugural programme.
Chief guest Er Rajendra Kublai in his inaugural address encouraged the students to gain knowledge and skills in addition to academics in order to excel in life. He motivated students to be goal oriented and focused.
Fr Joseph Lobo, director presided over the function. He emphasized the importance of innovation and encouraged students to develop interest get ideas and have an initiative to implement those ideas. Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, principal of the college appreciated the departmental activities organized in the previous years and encouraged the association members to organize innovative activities.
Fr Rohith D’Costa, Fr Ajith Menezes, assistant directors and Dr Rio D’Souza, vice principal were the other dignitaries present on the dais.
Toufeeq A, president of Students Association, gave a brief report about various association activities proposed for the academic year 2013-2014. The inaugural function concluded with vote of thanks by Shakthi Das, secretary of the association.
After the inaugural programme, Rajendra Kalbavi handled a session on “Innovative World of Alternative Technologies”. He explained about alternate materials and alternate methods used in building construction. Filler slab, ferocement building components, funicular shells, latto blocks etc, were some of the alternative technologies discussed.
Vinod, Engineer, Ramco Cement, Arun Raj and Shailesh, members, Association of Consulting Civil Engineers, Mangalore chapter were present on occasion.
The teaching and non teaching staffs of department of civil, students of first semester and third semester participated in the programme.
