New Delhi, Sep 10 (IANS): Women of Ravidas Camp in Delhi's R.K. Puram, home to four of the six accused in the Dec 16 gang-rape case, have demanded the death sentence for them.
On Tuesday, Additional Sessions Judge Yogesh Khanna found the four accused - Mukesh, Pawan Gupta, Vinay Sharma and Akshay Thakur - guilty after almost nine months of the brutal crime. The quantum of punishment would be announced Sep 11.
The fifth accused - Ram Singh - died in jail during the trial while a minor, also involved in the crime, was remanded in a special home by a justice juvenile board Aug 3.
Ravidas Camp was home to Ram Singh, fruit seller Pawan Gupta, gym instructor Vinay Sharma and Ram Singh's brother Mukesh.
"We appreciate the court verdict, all the four should be butchered," Asha, one of the residents, told IANS.
Agreed Neetu, who said the accused had brought shame to the entire locality, inhabited mostly by daily wage labourers, rickshaw-pullers, hawkers, etc.
"They are a blot on our locality and we demand the harshest punishment for them," she said.
Similar views were expressed by Shobha who said a strict precedent in the form of death sentence is necessary to curb such incidents.
"People have no fear and think they can get away with anything. An example should be set with this case," she said.
The brutal gang-rape took place Dec 16, 2012. A 23-year-old female physiotherapy intern was beaten and gang raped in a bus in which she was travelling with her male companion who was beaten up. The woman died from her injuries 13 days later while undergoing emergency treatment in Singapore.
