Puttur, Aug 8: In a tragic accident that occurred at Mukrumpadi on Puttur – Sullia highway, a differently-abled woman has lost her life on Tuesday night.
The unfortunate woman is identified as twenty-five years old Padmavathi, daughter of Mukrumpadi residents, the late Sheshappa Moolya and Gopi.
Despite her disability, Padmavathi was running a small shop on the road side near the entrance to the KSRTC depot with the government aid that she was getting and was financially independent.
The pickup vehicle has dragged her several meters away after dashing against her when she was walking home after closing her shop on Tuesday night, killing her on the spot.
She used to maintain her routine of starting at 8 am from home and walk to her nearby shop. Similarly she used to close her shop at 8.30 pm and walk back home every night. The children of her elder brother were accompanying her sometimes when she walked back home. However, she was walking alone at the time of the accident on Tuesday.
A KSRTC workshop is being constructed near KSRTC depot at Mukrampadi. The wet mud from it was spread on the road. She was trying to avoid the mud and walking on the side when the vehicle has knocked her down. There is no street light on the road. It is said that she stood on the road side when the vehicle was speeding.
The vehicle that caused her death has sped from the scene and the police are on the lookout for it. More than sixty pickups are stopped and checked from Tuesday night for the purpose but they could not locate the vehicle that caused the accident says traffic inspector Rakshit.
In a similar accident that had occurred a few months ago near Mukrampady’s Bhagavathi garage, a tipper had knocked down two people and injured another person when they were walking on the road. Before the people forgot that incident, the pickup has killed this independent woman in a hit and run case.
