Udupi, Jul 24: The people of Adi Udupi on Wednesday July 24 staged a protest in front of a meat stall here that allegedly sold rotten mutton.
It is said that people who bought mutton from Bhavani mutton stall found worms in the meat.
Nearly 100 kg of meat was found to be rotten at the stall, it is learnt.
Angry locals who gathered at the spot forcibly shut down the stall in protest.
Around 40 people from Malpe had bought mutton from the stall as part of a vow at Marigudi, Kaup. They bought the meat at 4 am, and on reaching home, found worms in it. They went back to return the meat.
The people gathered at the stall in large numbers, and an argument ensued that soon turned into chaos. Sources said that the stall owner tried to escape.
Police inspector Lingaraju arrived at the spot and brought the situation under control.
Speaking to daijiworld, Lingaraju said that a complaint regarding stale meat was given by Sadananda Bangera and Chandrakant. Altogether, 150 kg of meat was bought from the stall, he said.
Pradeep of Bhavani mutton stall, against whom the complaint was made, paid back the money to the customers but maintained that the meat was freshly chopped on Tuesday night, hours before it was sold, and that it was not his fault but of the customers who may not have stored it properly.
The matter was finally settled between the parties and no FIR was filed.
