Bangalore, Jul 5: The parents of a girl, who tried to arrange for the marriage of their daughter with a close relative in order to retain property worth crores of rupees within family circles, paid a heavy price for their greed in the form of their own daughter. Fed up by the prolonged pestering by her parents to marry her maternal uncle who is uneducated, an engineering student named Bharati (22) committed suicide.
Bharati was a resident of Nanjanarasappa Layout in Canara Bank Colony within the limits of Chandra Layout police station in the city. Her father, Gopal Reddy, basically from Andhra Pradesh, had settled down at Nanjanarasappa Lay Out about 25 years back. Reddy, who came to the city searching for work as a coolie, grew as a builder in course of time through his hard work. Reportedly, he had also bought property worth about three crore rupees in the name of Bharati in the city.
The parents had decided to give Bharati in marriage to her mother’s younger brother, Hari. Bharati offered stiff resistance to the proposal. When the parents became insistent, she firmly said that she would not marry for two more years. She also told her parents that she wants to pursue further studies. Her parents however, stuck to their stand that she should marry Hari, who is uneducated. It is said that their decision was influenced by the desire to ensure that the property they own remains in the family, as Bharati happened to be their only daughter.
Bharati had completed engineering course in electronics and communications, and had appeared for the final examination last month. Bharati has a younger brother, Manjunath, who is also pursuing engineering degree course
Reportedly, hot words were exchanged between Bharati and her parents on this issue on Wednesday night. When Bharati did not get up as usual on Thursday morning, the parents went to her room and were shocked to see that their daughter had ended her life by consuming poison. They took her to a private hospital, where she was pronounced brought dead.
In a suicide note left behind in the form of recorded statement in the cell phone, Bharati said she was frustrated at the refusal of her parents to allow her to continue education. She also said that she treats her parents as gods, but was unable to accept their choice of her life partner. “I am ending my life by consuming poison. Please do not admit me into any hospital. If you do, please do not take me back home. You can even admit me to a hostel if I am alive. Never reveal to relatives that I had committed suicide for the above reason,” she said in the recorded statement.
