Lay participation: Bishop of Udupi becomes trend setter

Udupi, Jul 5: The newly created Udupi diocese with a visionary bishop at the helm has become a Trend Setter in involving Lay Faithful into Church Administration and Service.  In constituting the participatory structures in the diocese, he has given a big chunk of responsibilities to the lay people, which is unique not only in the Church of Karnataka but all over India.





Bishop Gerald Lobo who had created history by appointing a Religious Sister as Diocesan Financial Administrator, has now appointed another 4 lay persons to head the diocesan commissions.  Melwyn Aranha (Commission for Labor), Sharlet Furtado (Commission for Justice and Peace), Sr. Teresa Martis (Commission for Women) & Sr. Veera Monis (Integral Child Development Program – ICDP) have been inducted into service of the diocese.
 
The directors of various commissions took charge of office at a brief prayer service led by Bishop Gerald Lobo at Mother of Sorrows Church, Udupi on 4th July, 2013.  The Vicar General Msgr. Baptist Menezes was present on the occasion.

    Our clergy treat everybody equally, but sometimes they treat a few ed more equally! That is how they manage parishes and diocese and survive.

    It is greatly appreciated that more and more faithful are involved in the decision making process of the church. Our laity are not given sufficient space in the administrative services and still a sleeping giant. Congratulations to Bishop Most Rev Gerald Lobo for the bold steps taken. If all- both clergy and the faithful cooperate and work with the Bishop the Diocese will reach greater heights.

    Bishop Gerald is a hardworking bishop.he takes in to confidence everyone when he does his pastoral ministry. I am sure within few years Udupi stands in great heights in pastoral ministry. All glory honor belongs to the LORD who called us. we are building up LORD's kingdom of LOVE through service. Let us be positive in whatever we do....when we keep away our personal agendas and take LORD's Mission..surely diocese will be blessed. LAITY, RELIGIOUS as well as CLERGY join hand in the mission of the LORD.I am happy that Fr. Edwin is the youth director..please give priority to build the youth. Udupi has got great number of youth as well as teenagers. all the parish priests support youth ministry. God bless you. I assure my prayers.

    Be posetive Rohan kaup, instead of torturing in your words.how many people are having politics inside the family, could be one of your family too. stop pointing out in political Activities, why you can not take it in peace and justice.every individual different thinking and thoughts...but doing the best for the society instead of having Lavish life..fr martis have all knowledge on multy religious believes,but he is very religious person too...he is the person got many talents than you and me.

    This is a great step by the Bishop of Udipi who is a great visionary. I wonder not many lay people comment in this column. In my opinion, lay people themselves are responsible for their low participation in the church matters. Church is essentially the people of God, not just priests and nuns. Let us support this Bishop and build up a truly participative church.

    Building Network of Networks for Udupi Diocese surely a bold march towards decentralization of church administration and its Services by appointing Religious Heads and Lay Faithful. First it built a MINI NETWORK appointing a Religious Sister as Diocesan Financial Administrator. Today we heard about MEDIUM NETWORK for Commission for Labor, Commission for Justice and Peace, Commission for Women and Commission for Integral Child Development Program. Next we might hear about somehow abut META NEWORK for sharing relationship between gatherings and those who are part of them JUST like it is good for the mini and medium networks to have a sense of connection with a larger whole, so it is for the gatherings.
    "What is the Kingdom of God like? How can I illustrate it? It is like a tiny mustard seed that a man planted in a garden it grows and becomes a tree, and the birds make nests in its branches." Luke 13:18-19.
