Moodbidri, Jun 13: Roopa Chavadi (17), a second year pre university class student residing in a hostel in Vidyagiri here, committed suicide on the night of Tuesday June 11. Roopa ended her life inside her hostel room between 7.30 and 8.15 pm that day.
Roopa, daughter of Shekharappa, who works for a private school, was a brilliant student. She belonged to Mudargi taluk in Gadag district. In the previous annual examination, she had scored 86 percent marks. During the summer vacations, Roopa had visited her native place. It is learnt that her parents, during her stay there, had expressed the opinion that she should strive to better her academic achievement.
When her roommates left for dinner on Tuesday, Roopa reportedly told them that she would join them a little later. When they came back after dinner, they found that the door of the room had been locked from inside. After forcing the door open, they found that Roopa was hanging from the ceiling fan in the room.
It is gathered that in a suicide note left behind, Roopa claimed responsibility for her death, adding that she was not able to stand up to the expectations of her parents.
