Sullia, May 28: A tanker carrying petrol and diesel tripped and fell across the road at Baitadka, Adkar near Jalsoor in the taluk on Monday May 27 evening and started leaking. The people, throwing all precautions to the wind, gathered at the spot in large numbers to collect diesel and petrol in containers of different sizes.
The tanker was carrying diesel and petrol to Kushalnagar from Mangalore, when it fell while negotiating a steep road bend.
Initially, diesel and petrol started trickling in small quantities, but the people who gathered there worked out a bigger hole so that they get ample opportunities to loot the leaking these highly inflammable liquids. Drums, cans, bottles, utensils, etc were used to carry the petroleum products home or fill the tanks of their vehicles.
The driver of the tanker, Monappa, and cleaner, Sushanth, however, escaped unhurt. The locals said that the bend here has become steeper after the road was widened two weeks back by Karnataka Road Development Corporation Ltd, and that heavy vehicles find it harder to negotiate this stretch.
The police later reached the spot, dispersed the crowd, and stopped the leakage by using clothes. A crane was hired to lift the truck from its position.Â
