Gulmarg, Mar 3: The much-awaited second leg of the 5th Khelo India Winter Games (KIWG), initially postponed due to inadequate snowfall, is now set to take place from March 9 to 12 in Gulmarg, Jammu & Kashmir, following a significant snow accumulation in the region.
Originally scheduled for February 22-25, the event had to be deferred as the ski slopes of Gulmarg lacked sufficient snow. However, with the resort receiving substantial snowfall over the past week—five to eight inches on Monday alone—officials have confirmed that the sporting spectacle will now proceed as planned.

Over 300 Athletes to Compete in Multiple Snow Sports
The second leg of KIWG 2025 will witness the participation of over 300 athletes from across India, competing in thrilling winter sports, including:
• Alpine Skiing
• Nordic Skiing
• Ski Mountaineering
• Snowboarding
• Ice Hockey
Preparations for the event have been finalized, ensuring world-class facilities for the athletes.
First Leg Successfully Concluded in Leh
The first leg of KIWG 2025 was successfully hosted in Leh, Ladakh, from January 23 to 27, featuring ice hockey and ice skating at prominent venues like the NDS Stadium, Guphuk Pond, and LSRC Army Rink.
This initiative aims to position India as a major player in winter sports by providing athletes with high-level competition and exposure to international-standard facilities.
Gulmarg: India’s Premier Ski Destination
With world-class ski slopes comparable to France, Switzerland, and Italy, Gulmarg is fast emerging as India’s top winter sports destination. The Gulmarg Gondola, one of the highest cable car systems in the world, carries skiers up to a height of 3,980 meters (13,058 feet) on Kongdoori Mountain, a shoulder of the Apharwat Peak (4,200 meters / 13,780 feet).
In addition to winter sports, the resort boasts the highest golf course in the world, where legendary players like Tiger Woods have teed off in the past.
Government’s Push for Winter Sports Tourism
The central government, in collaboration with the Jammu & Kashmir administration, is actively promoting Gulmarg as India’s premier winter sports hub. The Khelo India Winter Games are part of a larger effort to boost tourism, infrastructure, and sporting talent in the region.
With fresh snowfall setting the perfect stage, Gulmarg is all set to host a thrilling edition of the Khelo India Winter Games 2025.
