Udupi: 23-year-old Dr Chethan D Rai dies in Kundapur accident

Udupi, May 28: Dr Chethan D Rai (23), only son of M Dinakar Rai, a retired Vijaya Bank manager from Parari, Kedinje in the district, lost his life due to a road accident, which had occurred at Kundapur on Tuesday May 21.

The deceased was undergoing house surgeon training at Kasturba Medical College Hospital in Manipal, after completing his MBBS degree from there. He had always excelled in academics.

Chethan was standing by the side of the highway on May 21 to come to Udupi from the family’s ancestral house at Ankadakatte Kundapur last Tuesday, when a car hit him. Chethan, who fell on the road, had suffered serious head injuries. He was rushed to Manipal Hospital for treatment immediately. However, he breathed his last on Sunday May 26.

He is survived by parents.

    It is so sad to hear of all the young and tragic losses due to vehicle accidents or being knocked down by vehicles. Wish they do something about the irate drivers and the innocent losses lost due to reckless driving. Somebody please take a lead in Mangalore to raise awareness to what is happening and stop this before more losses happen. RIP Dr. Chethan, an irate driver took your years of life ahead. Our deepest condolence to his family that now have a void in their life. Our thoughts are with you all.

    I know him personally, a very nice person, always goes out of his way helping people. His loss is immense, it is Indian governament who is to be blamed for such a bad road condition and right at that palce ther were few more acidents and no action taken so far. Dont know how many more lives have to be lost before something is done. God bless his soul.

    Very unfotunate accident of Dr.Chethan.D.Rai. The car driver who hit him and taken his life need to be imprisoned with capital punishment because his neglegance has snatched the young doctor from this world.My sincere condolences to the parents ,relatives,friends of Dr.Rai and may God rest in peace of the departed soul.Thanq.

    some questions are always disturbing, when such incident happens...
    even though we see lot of people losing their lives because of road accidents, why drivers don't bother?
    when these reckless drivers will understand the value of human life?
    every person has his own family, commitments, dreams... why drivers are so careless?

    Absolutely agree with you. There is lot of difference when Indians drive in Gulf/other countries and back India. Back in India there are no strict laws or punishments when you commit any accidents and you can just walk away freely by just loosing few thousand rupees. If the RTO implement strict license issue procedures, tough penalties or black points or heavy fines, high compensation if person injures or dies in accidents, then the things will change and drivers will be more careful and minimize the accidents

    May god give power to his family to bear this pain. What a tragedy!!, even if you are standind by the side of the road, there is no safety. This is what happens if you give DL to unworthy drivers, even some of them got the DL by bribing the RTO. Corruption kills innocent people, this is the best example infront of us.

    What a shocking news and a tragedy this is . May God Grant eternal Rest to this young Doctor's soul. More importantly, May God give courage, hope and confidence to Mr. Dinakar Rai and his wife to live on in life. Their only son, only hope is life has gone ahead, so let God fill that vacuum at home and be with the couple. It is really sad & shocking.

    Most of the drivers I have seen throughout India consume alcohol and gutkha and drive carelessly.If the public do not keep the distance on the main roads from speeding vehicles, the accident can be very fatal. My heartfelt codolences to the bereaved family.When you travel always pray for the departed souls who have lost their preciuos life in accidents. Yet a time they will rescue us- Amen.

    My heart goes out to the parents of Dr.Rai, for all the sacrifices they would have made to give him a good education. For all the hopes they had on their child, and now see him faded like yesterdays rose .....gone forever.

    As a parent a fear gets into me to hear such incidents happen in and around our neighbourhood of losing our children. We all have to make a decision that we will drive safely and adhere to all road safety rules to minimise accidents.

    Automobile is bane for us. We Indians are unfit to use the roads and vehicles... Budding doctor is sacrificed for the reckless driving of a fellow citizen... Adminstration is mute so these things happen. I had requested DC of twin coastal districts to make wearing hard hats compulsory for both two wheel rider and his pillion as we lose too many young lives mostly students to accidents, but the DCs are busy in making money and are not interested in the safety of general public. This is the state of affairs of our state and attitude of babus..

    Dear Shahanawaz, this is not the problem of any Automobile Business Booming or bad road conditions for fatal accidents. This is the problem of formation of law and strict implementation of the same. Let our RTA makes a Law to punish concerned person to 10 years in Jail, cancellation of driving license and minimum Rs Five Lakhs of compensation to be paid by concerned person or his Insurance Company and then you see the difference. You can see the difference in Gulf Countries we care for pedestrians and passengers not just because we love them but scared about the rule applicable aftermath of fatal accidents
