Udupi: Another tragedy at Malpe beach - Married woman drowns

Udupi, May 20: In yet another tragedy at Malpe beach here, a young woman met watery grave on Monday May 20 while playing in the water.

The deceased has been identified as Vijayalaxmi (25), a resident of Kakkunje, Ambagilu here.

She had come to the beach along with her family. She and her brother Srinivas played in the water and before they could realize, went too far out. A huge wave engulfed Vijayalaxmi and she got pulled away into the sea.
Efforts by Srinivas and others to rescue her went in vain.

Vijaylaxmi, who hailed from Bangalore, married Prabhakar Shetty a year ago.

The locals rushed to the spot and helped in retrieving the body and shifting it to hospital.

This is the second tragedy in just about 24 hours reported at Malpe beach. On Sunday May 19, a boat with 16 persons capsized and a baby went missing. Gross negligence and violation of rules by the boat owner had led to the incident, it is said.

Angered by Vijayalaxmi's death, the locals said that though a board cautioning tourists has been put up at the beach by the beach development authority, there are no lifeguards, police or expert swimmers for emergencies. "Even if police are not adept at swimming, they should develop a system to get contact fishermen who are expert swimmers in case of emergencies, so that lives can be saved," they said.

A case has been registered in Malpe police station.

    This type of incidents really bring bad name to Malpe seashore which is developing.Why can't we appoint proper guides to guide the public to ensure proper protection from contingencies. Rest in peace to the lady demised and pray God to grant strength to the dependants to withstand this irreparable loss.Thanq

    Very sad news. But, its no use of blaming the administration or the police. It is our duty to take care of ourselves & our dear ones. It's no fun going into the deep sea playing.Even expert swimmers sometimes find it difficult to swim in the rough sea. So each individual who visits any beach should always be cautious & follow the rules & guidelines of the administration.

    May her soul rest in peace..! sad, a young life, just married has gone away in a fraction of a second.
    Why do we start a blame game as soon as an incident like this happens. Hardly 24hours prior Malpe beach was in news for almost similar case. In spite of this, in spite of danger boards, in spite of warnings from local people & authorities, why do people ignore warnings & go ahead taking these risks.
    Unfortunately we at times like to ignore warnings, break rules, go over board on issues & then we think we are smart..!! When a tragedy happens then we realise it is too late to amend our mistakes or blunders.
    No doubt there should be security in place to ensure safety of people. But then we need to be careful ourselves as well. Why blame systems when it is more of our fault than a system failure..!!
    I hope people / tourists will take care in future & abide by rules at any place they are. It could be at sea, it could be inside an aircraft, it could be on board a train or a bus etc. We need to safe guard ourselves rather than blame systems later.!!

    I don't agree all these. Ultimately it's our own fault. If you are not careful of your own life, why you are blaming police men, fisher men and all. When there is a alerting board around, why we need to take such a risk of moving so deep in to the water. I am also brought up at Surathkal and we used to have frequent beach visits. While college days also we used to go for trips and play in beaches. But we used to be double careful on ourselves and fellow friends alerting them not to take any risk. Now it costed a life. But than blaming anybody else, lets accept the fact and learn lesson.

    Really sad news may GOD give her family the strength to bear her loss...

    In India its useless to blame the government they will do what they want and not that is required for the people so the people itself must be cautious and such lossess because the government is not bothered of anything as its not a loss to them. If such incident would have taken place in the family of any Minister then all the necessary precautions required would have been taken.....

    Its really unfortunate a young girl lost her life. Yes we need security ,life guard etc. Same time its peoples responsibility to read the danger signs and act accordingly. Comaparing UAE with india is not relevent. UAE is having few beaches and Karnataka itself having manay beaches, middleeast beaches are silent beaches compared to indian ocean beaches. All you can say is People have to be more cautious while then get into beaches.UAE beaches are very clean, not because they kept cleaning team, its you and me follow sytem mentioned by the authorities with fear, but in Malpe do we follow???. We dont follow govt. implemented messeges and while accident we FIRST blame Govt.

    what a tragedy? malpe beach a is a famous beach from my childhood. put life-guard and a police rescue team... peoples are safe... you save life.... good name for D.k. GOOD NAME FOR THE MANGALORE. SAGE BEACH. IT COST PEANUT.. SO SAVE LIFE AND ENCOURAGE THE PUBLIC TO USE BEACH AND ENJOY LIFE. PUT ONE WATER SCOOTER.. RENT THEM AND SAME TIME THEY WILL RESCUE THE PEOPLE FROM DROWING. TAKE EXAMPLE OF DUBAI. SEE THE JEMIERAH BEACH. LIFE GUARDS, TOILETS, POLICE, RESCUE TEAM... A SAMLL COUNTRY WITH A BIG JOB TO SAVE PEOPLE AND LIFE...VERY URGENT.... GOVT AND WISE PEOPLE PLEASE TAKE MY ADVISE.. YOU SAVE PEOPLE AND THE GOD WILL REWARD YOU FOR YOUR LIFE SAVING EFFORTS..

    Authority should keep some one to guide people who come to the beach....hope our new MLA will do the needful....afterall Malpe is tourist spot......There should be freequent announcement in the beach about SAFEFY......

    In St. Mary's Island such incidents use to happen. But Malpe beach is one of the safe, I think more safety measures should be implemented.

    All beaches should not open for visitors,some particular beaches only allow to visitors and where deploy life guards from police department,so can avoid some extent this kind of tragedies.
