Udupi, May 20: Kaup MLA and newly inducted minister for urban development Vinay Kumar Sorake on Monday May 20 assured that measures will be taken to supply water in areas reeling under shortage of drinking water.
Addressing a press meet at the district Congress office during his maiden visit to Udupi as minister, Sorake said that water will be supplied across the district through tankers and that the district administration will make appropriate arrangements in this regard.
"The district administration will take immediate measures to supply water through tankers across the district. This apart, funds will be released to dig borewells and undertake repair works wherever needed," he said.
"On May 22, a meeting will be convened with officials to discuss development works in urban areas, towns and city corporations. District administrations will be instructed to give a review of the development in their areas every month. As the election code of conduct was in place, there was a delay in the appointment of president and vice-president of Udupi CMC but a meeting will be called very soon and a decision will be taken," he said.
"I will strive for the maximum development of Udupi district. We will provide a corruption-free, transparent and active administration to the people of Udupi," he assured, adding that he will follow the Congress manifesto religiously and as a minister, try to fulfill the promises made by the party.
"I will hold discussion with senior party leaders like Dr Veerappa Moily and Oscar Fernandes, and with their help, bring about development in this region. Udupi is already well-known in the fields of education, banking and tourism, we will use the available resources further and develop it more," he said.
MLA Pramod Madhwaraj and Pratapchandra Shetty were present.
Earlier, Sorake was given a splendid welcome by scores of supporters, well-wishers and Congress workers. Krishnaraj Saralaya, Narasimhamurthy, Janardhan Tonse, Veronica Cornelio and others were present.

Mangalore, May 20: Newly inducted minister for urban development Vinay Kumar Sorake was received with a rousing welcome by his well-wishers, supporters and Congress party leaders here on Monday May 20.
He arrived by afternoon flight from Bangalore, where he took the oath as minister in chief minister Siddaramaiah's cabinet.
Speaking to media at Mangalore International Airport, Sorake said that being the minister for urban development, his top priority will be to ensure that cities in the state witness quick progress.
"I have just been posted as urban development minister, but I am yet to get a full report on the status of development in cities," he said.
"A meeting will be held on May 22 with officials in Bangalore with regard to development of cities in the state. The government will come up with the best plans to enhance devlopment and specially provide basic amenities to the people in cities," he informed.
"There are many plans in the anvil for Mangalore's development also. I will convene a meeting of the officials at the earlist in this regard," he added.
On the issue of providing title deeds, he said those living government land for the past 5 to 10 years will be given RTC.
Congress leader Ivan D'Souza and others welcomed him at the airport with garlands.
