Mangalore, Apr 23: The commercial tax department officials on Tuesday April 23 seized 27 cartons of mixer grinders at Central railway station here during a routine check at railway stations, airport and bus stands.
The 27 cartons contained 6 mixer grinders each. In all, 162 grinders were seized by the team led by Mahmood Khan, assistant commissioner of Commercial Tax Enforcement-III.
As per the maximum retail price printed on the mixer grinders, the total cost of these 162 mixers stands at Rs 4,65,750.
Speaking to Daijiworld, Mahmood Khan said, "As per the instructions of DC Harsh Gupta under election commission's guidelines, strict checks are being conducted on a routine basis. We found a large number of cartons lying at Central railway station."
He further said that there was no representative or any person guarding the cartons, and as the goods were not accompanied by documents under the VAT Act, the goods were seized and kept in the commercial tax department.
As per initial information obtained, it is learnt that the goods were on board a Mumbai train to Mangalore Central Railway Station. As there was no authorized claimant for the goods, it is highly suspected to have been brought to Mangalore for distribution among voters, he said.
