Seventeen plants for potable water in coastal Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, Apr 23 (IANS): Authorities in Kerala are set to install 17 water treatment plants in the coastal region to provide affordable potable water to the people, an official said Tuesday.

The water for treatment would be taken either from the sea or form other water bodies.

Speaking to IANS, Ashok Singh, managing director of Kerala Water Authority (KWA), said the people living in the coastal areas are the worst affected when it comes to availability of potable water.

"Each of these treatment plants would be installed by the state government and would cost two million rupees each. In an hour these plants can process around 5000 to 10,000 litres of water," said Singh.

"We will provide 20 litres of good potable water at a cost of one rupee," said Singh.
