Mubarak to undergo new retrial May 11

Cairo, Apr 18 (IANS): An Egyptian court has set May 11 as the date to retry former president Hosni Mubarak and his interior minister Habib al-Adli in a case related to the protesters' killing, Xinhua reported.

The former president along with his two sons -- Gamal and Alaa, as well as fugitive tycoon Hussein Salem will also be retried over charges of financial corruption and profiteering.
The retrial had been scheduled for April 13, but it was adjourned, as the presiding judge withdrew from the case and referred it to the Court of Appeals.

Mubarak was sentenced to life imprisonment in June, 2012 in the case related to killing of protesters. But he appealed the court's verdict later. The Court of Cassation accepted the appeal and ordered a retrial for Mubarak.

On Monday, Cairo Court of Appeals ordered to grant parole to Mubarak in the case, but to keep him in custody pending investigations in other cases.

Mubarak ruled Egypt for about three decades and was toppled after nationwide protests sweeping the country Jan. 25, 2011.
