Unable to pay bribe, woman delivers baby at bus-stand

Salem (TN), Apr 15 (PTI):
A pregnant woman was allegedly asked to pay a bribe for treatment at a government hospital here, and unable to pay it, she was forced to deliver the baby at a bus-stand.

The 24-year-old woman, a labourer hailing from Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh, had come to the hospital with her husband and two children, aged five and two years, after she experienced labour pains this morning, but some nursing staff allegedly demanded Rs 1000 for her delivery, Dr Vallinayagam, Hospital Dean said.

The woman was reportedly forced to go out of the ward when she could not pay the money and when she reached the Salem old bus-stand, walking for about a Km from the hospital, she delivered the baby boy, Dean said, adding two women passers-by assisted her.

Locals immediately called an ambulance and rushed her to the same government hospital where the matter was reported to me, he said.

Vallinayagam said a three team headed by him would conduct an inquiry tomorrow and if the incident was found true, the hospital staff concerned would be suspended.

All our doing mine & yours, all of us. We pay bribes because we can afford it, and the consequence is this poor people who cannot afford a meal deliver their babies at the bus stand, rail platforms, even public toilets and its going to get worse. All of us have fattened these blood sucking leeches and their greed is insatiable.

We pay bribes sometimes for silly reasons we cannot stand in the queue for five more minutes, the curry is on fire the clothes in the washing machine might shred into rags and what not, its endless. We feed corruption yet we are the only ones who can end corruption by waiting our turn, standing in the queue, providing proper documents and ultimately refusing to bribe. It is time we teach our children to be honest and spread honesty lest they be subjected to more horrendous treatment.

Corruption continues to eat away all the basic ammenities of our countrysecurity, health/medicare, education and justice. The common man is the most affected and yet he is the only one who can stop it sacrifices will be needed is the common man prepared.

Crores of Rupees spent for Govt. Hospitals for Medicines, qualified Doctors, Staff etc. etc. but the result is zero. Public should avail the benifits of this money instead of spending huge money in private Hospitals.Quality treatment is our/public right in govt. hospitals.

No suspension. Hire or fire that must be the strategy even in Govt / public sector companies. Then only people will work otherwise they keep quiet and think about bribe.

Our own hospital staff don't care their own country people so why do we complain about other country. She could have died like Dr. Savita. So the best thing fix our people first then advice others.

So sad and disturbing, Hospital staff that put her back on road, needs to be fired by the hospital, and make a in depth inquiry, so it does not happen again.
