Sullia, Apr 14: Misuse of power by government officials and bureaucrats is often a subject of much debate. There are some who abuse their positions to get favours out of turn, and there are those, as in this case, who seem to think everything comes free of cost with their official badge.
In an amusing incident, a lady who bought sweets worth Rs 300 from a bakery here walked out nonchalantly without bothering to pay, claiming that she was the assistant commissioner of the commecial tax department in Bangalore!
It is said that three women entered Ranjith Bakery at Gandhinagar here and bought a variety of sweets. When the cashier handed them a bill of Rs 300, one of the women said that she was the assistant commissioner of the commercial tax department in Bangalore and sped off in a car with her companions without paying.
Taken aback by her behaviour, the bakery owner informed the Sullia police station. From there information was passed on to Kallugundi police, who intercepted the women's car and brought them to Sullia police station.
The lady then produced her id card and said that she was Indumati Patil, posted as AC in Bangalore.
Meanwhile the sub-inspector was in a meeting called by the deputy commissioner. He instructed the bakery owner to file a written complaint against the lady official, but he refused. When the lady offered to pay the money for the sweets she bought, the owner refused to take it and asked her to instead offer it to the deity at Kalkuda. The police, who could not ascertain whether she was really an official or an imposter, sent her back.
