Modi was unsuccessful in dealing with Gujarat riots: JD-U

New Delhi, Apr 13 (IANS): Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi was "unsuccessful" in dealing with the 2002 riots in the state, the Janata Dal-United (JD-U) said Saturday.

"As a head of the state of Gujarat, Narendra Modi was unsuccessful in dealing with the riots which occurred in 2002," JD-U spokesperson K.C. Tyagi said when asked whether the party considers Modi a secular person.

On being asked whether the party would give a time frame to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for declaring its prime ministerial candidate, Tyagi said: "BJP is our friend and there is no business and pressure tactics which is adopted with an ally."

"We will wait for the BJP to declare its PM candidate and we will comment then," he said.

There has been a growing demand for Modi as BJP's prime ministerial candidate.

JD-U leader and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has several times expressed grave reservations over Modi's candidature for prime ministership, given his alleged role in the 2002 Gujarat riots in which over 1,000 people died, mostly Muslims.

"We will pass our political resolution tomorrow," Tygai told reporters.

While the JD-U national executive met Saturday, the national convention will take place Sunday.

The JD-U is the largest constituent of the NDA after the BJP, with 20 members in the Lok Sabha. The party leads the government in Bihar, with the BJP as its junior partner.

I doubt you have ever read Panchajanya, Mr.Mohammad Salauddeen Bantwal, Mangalore/AUH. The whole world knows who said that. It was late Rajeev Gandhi. Now don't write back to tell Rajeev Gandhi was reading this statement holding Panchajanya (paper) in hand. Propaganda people please grow up.

Mr. Prabhu, yes RSS indeed supported the masscare of sikhs in 1984. If you check the editorial of 'Panchajanya' paper (which is backed by RSS) of that time, it clear mentioned that 'It's natural that if a big tree(Indira Ghandhi) falls, some of the plants (sikhs) around it perish'.

JDU is 100 % correct Dear DW , kindly allow me to quote few observations of Supreme Court against Modis Gujrat govt as published in Times Of India ( 12 Sept 2003 )

= " The Govt should quit if it can not punish the rioters "
= " The court questioned Modi govts RAJDHARMA "
= " You quit if you can not prosecute the guilty "
= " Democracy does not mean you will not prosecute anyone "
= The court termed the govts appeal before the High Court as - eye wash
= The court warned the state govt, that it would not be a silent spectator, and we will do it if the state keeps silent in its prayers before the High Court.
= We do not have any trust left in your prosecution agency. There appears to be some collusion between the govt and prosecution. It is a case where 14 people were burnt alive and is this the way prosecution conducted ??

As per Times of India - 21 July 2002 ( even after 5 months of tragedy ) The names of the Karsevaks died in the burning train were not made public.
I do not know whether the names have been published or not ??? And what made Mr Vajpyee
the then PM and BJP to keep quiet on this blunder.

As per another report of Indian Express of 8 Aug 2004, the Police Inspectors provided petrol
from their vehicles to burn houses and colonies.

When the question of Instigating and controlling the mob voilence comes I repeat my
opinion that CONG & BJP are the two faces of the SAME COIN

The person who could put his own wife under house arrest, what better could he do for the country ? The person who could not control single state, how could he rule the nation ? He better remain within his state and enjoy 'Dhokla' and 'Bavnagri Ghatia'. We do not want to be ruled by mass murderers.

This is the understatement of the century. What the JD-U needed to state was that Modi was 'deliberately' unsuccessful which is clearly evident from the Jafri case details and others. I believe that if a man who ‘claims’ to have brought so much development to Gujarat could not control the riots, it only goes to show that he deliberately wanted the riots to happen and continue unabated to satisfy his desires.

Even now he and his cronies in the Gujarat Govt. are using the entire state machinery to suppress the truth and Justice by manipulating/threatening/harassing witnesses. The space here is limited to provide the details supporting this claim.

I am sure the BJP has many more worthy/suitable candidates like Sushma Swaraj etc. for the PM's post, so why are they taking a risk with Modi ?

Even Congress supporters had no problem accepting Atal Behari Vajpayee as PM, so I dread if Modi becomes BJP's choice for PM as I believe it will divide this country further.

It is said that 'History repeats itself'. In Modi we will have history repeating 'Adolf Hitler'.

India has already been divided with the formation of Pakistan, Bangladesh and POK. If it was not for Indira Gandhi even Khalistan would have been a reality today.

Congress/UPA or BJP/NDA, India needs a PM who has 'wide' acceptability of all the communities in the country and who can keep India united.

Declan, Mumbai, Even I felt there is some toning-down in the statement of JDU. Earlier it used to be Modi is 'responsible' for the riots now it has become Modi was 'unsuccessful'. Very tame indeed. Modi 'failed' in his duties is perhaps more stronger.

Dear krishna, Mangalore, For our knowledge, please give us detailed account of Supreme Court 'reprimands' handed to Congress Government for their failure to bring at least person to justice in 1984 riots, and for their misuse of CBI in various cases. Please be objective to criticize both wrongs (1984 as well as 2002). If you write against one side the story looks 'overzealous' to me
