New Delhi, Apr 10 (IANS): All political parties should observe restraint, the CPI said Wednesday after Trinamool Congress activists allegedly went on the rampage in West Bengal in response to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee being heckled here.

Communist Party of India (CPI) leader D. Raja said the "manhandling and misbehaviour" with Banerjee and West Bengal Finance Minister Amit Mitra Tuesday should not have taken place.

"It should not have happened and we do not approve and endorse such acts. Manhandling and misbehaviour with chief minister (Mamata Banerjee) and finance minister (Amit Mitra) should not have taken place," Raja told reporters here.

"Having said that I must appeal to political parties to maintain restraint... a political battle has to be contested at political level and not like this," he said.

Banerjee Tuesday faced noisy protests from the Students Federation of India (SFI) -- the student wing of CPI-M -- activists who also heckled Mitra outside the Planning Commission here to protest a young comrade's death in Kolkata.
