Belgaum: Girl abducted and murdered - protestors caned, Moodlagi tense

Belgaum, Apr 2: A girl named Tasmiya (5), who was abducted on the night of Sunday March 31, was found packed in a gunny bag in lifeless state in a plantation at Moodlagi on Tuesday April 2 morning. She had been abducted from the courtyard of her house in Laxminagar, Moodlagi, when sleeping with her grandparents.
The abductors had left behind a note, demanding a ransom of ten lac rupees. The parents of Tasmiya, being poor, had expressed their inability to pool such a large sum, and had offered to pay one lac rupees instead. As the abductors did not accept this offer, they had lodged a police complaint on Monday April 1. Angered by this action, the abductors killed Tasmiya and abandoned her body, duly stuffed into a gunny bag, in a plantation in the village.
Relating to the incident, the police have arrested a person named Vasant (26), based on the mobile phone calls made to Tasmiya’s parents. The parents of Tasmiya, supported by hundreds of angry protestors, held demonstration in front of Moodlagi police station today morning, demanding immediate arrest of the culprits. The situation in the village turned tense after the gathering pelted stones at the police station, and the police had to resort to bursting of tear gas shells and lathi charge to disperse the protestors, who are unrelenting.
The situation continues to be tense in the village. Additional police forces are being rushed to the place to handle the situation. The police in the meanwhile, have registered a case and intensified efforts to find out the culprits.
