Brazilian air force gets more drones

Rio de Janeiro, Feb 19 (IANS): The Brazilian Air Force has said it has acquired two more Israeli-made drones last month to boost border security and safeguard upcoming sport events.

The two RQ-450 drones are not equipped with weapons and will be used for reconnaissance and patrolling, reported Xinhua.

Two other RQ-450s have already been in the service of the air force since 2011, including the one deployed during last year's UN Sustainable Development Conference (Rio 20), which drew leaders from around the globe.

The two newly-received drones, with several upgrades such as better cameras and a radar system, will be used to enhance public security during the FIFA Confederations Cup in June, the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics.

The two aircraft are currently being assembled at a base in Santa Maria in south Brazil, and are expected to be put on active duty in March.
