New Delhi, Feb 12 (IANS): The CBI Monday removed its chief prosecutor in the 2G spectrum case after he was allegedly found to have discussed the prosecution strategy with one of the accused.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) removed A.K. Singh from the case and registered a preliminary enquiry, an official said.

The investigating agency decided to remove Singh after it found an audio recording allegedly carrying a conversation between Singh and one of the accused in the case.

"The allegation against A.K. Singh is being probed and he has been removed from the prosecuting team in the 2G case. A preliminary enquiry has been registered to verify the allegations," said a CBI official.

He said that the court hearing the 2G case has also been informed of the development and another prosecutor has been appointed to assist in the ongoing trial.

"The agency possesses an audio recording with the suspected voices of Singh and one of the accused. In the recording, Singh shared the legal strategy with the accused. Now, the agency is probing the authenticity of the recording. We cannot confirm or deny the thing before examining the evidences," Ranjit Sinha, CBI director, told news channel CNN-IBN.

The 2G case is currently under trial before a special CBI court here.

The main accused, former union minister A. Raja, Unitech MD Sanjay Chandra and 12 others, including DMK leader Kanimozhi, have been examined by the prosecution. Cross-examination of the accused and witnesses is now on.
