Kundapur, Jan 14: Police on Sunday January 13 arrested nine persons, including three women allegedly involved in a prostitution racket. The accused were said to be on their way from Udupi to Goa when the arrest took place.
The accused are believed to be operating in Udupi, for a fee of Rs 10,000.
Acting on a tip-off from a reliable source, the police conducted the raid operation under the guidance of Kundapur DySP Yashodha. The police intercepted the Tempo Traveler in which they were travelling near Hari Kudru on National Highway 66 and took them into custody. It is also suspected that three other girls were supposed to join them midway during the journey.
The arrested have been identified as Sudeer Poojary Senapur, Prakash Shetty Tekatte, Iqbal Udupi, Firoz Yermal, Jafarulla Udupi, Golden Suresh Manipal, Nayana, Soniya and Swathi.
Golden Suresh and Nayana were mediators who allegedly hired girls. It is also learnt that Rs 10,000 was fixed as fee, along with a vehicle for a tour to Goa. Nayana would reportedly induce the girls into the business to earn money. Golden Suresh reportedly acted as a pimp.
The locals also suspect that the Scorpio which met with an accident recently near Maravanthe Beach was used for such activity.
A case has been registered in the Kundapur police station and investigation is on.
