Mangalore: Cultural Extravaganza Alva's Virasat to be Held from Jan 10-13

Mangalore, Dec 28: 'Alva's Virasat-2013', a national-level cultural festival by Alva's Education Foundation will be held from January 10 to 13 at Shobhabhavan in Mijar, said Dr Mohan Alva, chairman of Alva's Education Foundation.
Addressing a press meet here on Friday December 28, Dr Mohan Alva said that the Alva's Virasat National Award-2013 will be conferred on Padmabhushan Dr Padma Subrahmanyam, prominent classical dancer of South India.
The cultural fest will begin with a procession at Shobha Bhavan at 5.45 pm, followed by inauguration at 6 pm by Dr Veerendra Heggade, Dharmadhikari of Shree Kshetra Dharmasthala. Dr N Vinay Hegde, chairman of Nitte Education Trust will preside.
MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, MLA K Abhayachandra Jain, Capt Ganesh Karnik, former minister K Amarnath Shetty, entrepreneur Shashi Kiran Shetty, Nadoja G Shankar, president of G Shankar Family Trust, Udupi, Basavaraj, secretary of Information Broadcasting department, P Jayaram Bhat of Karnataka Bank, M Dasayya, DGM of Canara bank, entrepreneur Sudheer Shetty Mumbai, Suresh Bhandary Mumbai among others will be the guests.
Two Art Forms a Day
One the first day, from 7 pm to 8.30 pm there will be ‘Raaga Lahari' performed by various artists like Carnatic vocalist Padmabhushan D M Balamuralikrishna, flute by Pandit Ronu Mujandar, tabla by Abhijith Banerjee along with Vidwan Gatam Karthik.
From 8.40 pm to 10.15 pm, there will be performance by Grammy award winner Pandit Vishwamohan Bhat, Ustad Anwar Khan, Ustad Faiz Khan, Ustad Firoz Khan, Pandit Prithviraj and Deepak Pandit.
On the second day, from 6 pm to 8 pm, there will be east-west melodies where artists like Dr Mysore Manjunath, Vakla Zimpell (Poland), Pandit Rajesh Vaidhya, Ustad Fazal Qureshi, Vidwan Arjun Kumar and Vidwan Giridhar Udupa will perform. At 8.10 pm, various forms of classical and folk dances of Orissa performed by 60 artists of Konark Natya Mantap will be presented.
On January 12 (third day), there will be Kuchipudi performance by Padmabhushan Dr Raja and Padmabhushan Dr Radha along with their team from 6 pm to 8 pm. There will also be diya dance, Gootipuva dance and Chavo dance by 60 artists of Konark Natya Mantap.
On the last day, that is on January 13, there will be musical nite performed by playback singer and TV serial actor Vijayprakash and M D Pallavi from 6 pm to 8.20 pm.
At 8.30 pm, there will be a Malaysian fusion dance of old and new traditions.
Alva's Varna Virasat
The 2012 Alva's Varna Virasat, a national-level camp for artists will be held from January 4 to January 9. said Dr Mohan Alva.
The event will witness around 22 prominent painters from Delhi, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab and other states. On the occasion, a national-level painting exhibition will also be held from January 4 to January 13, he added.
Dr Alva said that this will be the last Virasat to be organized by Alva's Education Foundation, as there are plans to combine Alva's Virasat and Alva's Nudisiri as ‘Vishwa Alva's Nudisiri Virasat' in the coming years.
