Mangalore, Dec 21: The general body meeting of Mangalore City Corporation was held at Mangala Hall, Mangalore City Corporation on Wednesday December 19.
Corporator Harinath complained to the council that encroachment by the builders was rampant in all the wards of City Corporation. Hence action should be taken to evacuate the encroached portion of lands, he urged.
Shashidhar Hegde said, “A three member team consisting of a fact finding committee has been formed as per the directions of worshipful mayor and the committee visited various places. The committee was also promised by the respective persons of evacuating the encroachment done. Independent corporator now joined KJP, Mariamma Thomas demanded stringent action against those involved in encroachment. However none from the ruling party or opposition party showed their ‘interest’ in continuing the discussion on the issue for long time.”
Former Mayor Shankar Bhat demanded immediate action against the illegal flex and buntings placed on the roadside.
Corporator Appi said that though a private jeweler provided about 300 bins to collect waste, they were not properly maintained in Sooter Pet ward. She drew the attention of revenue department officials to look into the matter.
To a query, Commissioner Dr Harish Kumar told the council member that State Finance Commission has allotted Rs 6 cr from CM’s fund of which Rs 2.74 cr was meant for Surathkal assembly constituency and Rs 3.26 cr was for Mangalore South constituency.
Shashidhar Hegde also insisted that the junior health officer post which is vacant should be filled on contract basis.
CPI (M) corporator Jayanthi argued that interior roads in the MCC limits were not asphaltized, though the citizens paid the tax money. Commissioner Dr Harish Kumar answered that local body of the area is responsible for conducting the repair works.
Corporator Sudhir Kannur said that after payment of tax was made as self assessment scheme, many evaded tax. Another member Vijaykumar said that tax amount should be collected at Mangalore One center till 8 pm as the step would convince office goers.
As the door-to-door waste collection is started in many wards, in case the contractors fail to collect the waste, civics can utilize the helpline numbers, said commissioner Dr Harish Kumar. He added door to door waste collection service will be a paid service from April 2013. He also said that citizens now have more commitment to keep the city clean.
Mayor Gulzar Banu presided over the meet. Deputy Mayor Amitha Kala was also present.
