Mangalore, Dec 13: Kankanady rural police have seized 14 tons of iron rods and arrested 8 persons including a KFD leader. The arrested used to threaten and loot lorry drivers and cleaners by pointing revolver at them, it is learnt.
“KFD leader Abubakar Kulai was active in the racket in the name of his KFD organization,” police sources said.
Mohammed Jahid (24) of 6th block in Krishnapur, Nazif (20) resident of 6th block, Navaz (30) of 4th block in Naithangady, Abdul Khader (19) of Jokatte, Abdul Rahiman (34) of Krishnapur, Abubakar Kulai (40), Kudroli K Moideen and Abdul Sattar of Pandeshwar are the arrested.
Police seized 14 tons of iron, along with car, bike, phone and pistol among other items. The accused have been awarded 14 days judicial custody.
Lorry driver Manjunath and cleaner Mahesh were transporting iron rods from Bhatkal to Virajpet on November 20. The accused countered them with their Maruthi Alto Car near Kannur mosque on November 20 at 12.30 am. They allegedly threatened the driver and the cleaner with a pistol.
Later, they kidnapped the duo and abandoned them in a far-away forest. Lorry loaded with 14 tons of iron rods was hijacked by the accused and was parked in an unknown place. Cash worth Rs 6000 and a mobile phone which was in the lorry was also looted. The lorry was abandoned in Uppinangady.
Vijaz Jucaco filed a complaint in the Kankanady rural police station and a case was registered in this regard. Police succeeded in arresting 8 persons earlier this week.
