Bangalore, Dec 11: After Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, who is also the Chairman of the Cauvery River Authority, declined to meet Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar in Delhi on Friday against the Cauvery Monitoring Committee’s decision asking the State Government to release 12 tmcft of water to Tamil Nadu, Karnataka is making yet another attempt by leading an all-party delegation seeking the Prime Minister’s intervention.

Shettar wanted to meet the Prime Minister last week to express the State’s inability to release 12 tmcft of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu by the end of December.

With the Prime Minister declining to meet him, the Karnataka Chief Minister was able to meet Union Water Resources Minister Harish Rawat on December 7.

The Chief Minister, who made a statement on the Cavuery issue in the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday, said he would a convene all-party and floors leaders meeting in the next few days to discuss implications of the Cauvery Monitoring Committee (CMC) directive to release 12 tmcft of water to Tamil Nadu in December.

After discussing pros and cons of the CMC order in the meeting, he would lead all party delegation to New Delhi to meet the Prime Minister to apprise him about prevailing drought in the Cauvery basin districts as well low storage of water in state’s reservoirs, Shettar said.

The Supreme Court on Monday refused to go into the validity or otherwise of the order passed by the CMC on December 7 and left it open to the States of Tamil Nadu and

Karnataka to seek appropriate remedy before the Cauvery River Authority, headed by the Prime Minister.

Karnataka’s Water Resources Minister Basavaraj Bommai said that the Tamil Nadu has been seeking release of 30 tmcft of water in December.

Senior counsel Fali Nariman and Anil Divan, who are appearing for Karnataka in the Suprme Court, have expressed the State’s dissatisfaction with the CMC order.

The State Government has already written to the Prime Minister requesting him to convene a CRA meeting to discuss issues, including notification of final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal, Bommai said.

Earlier, Leader of the Opposition Siddaramaiah demanded the Chief Minister to make a statement on the issue after the Supreme Court refused to go into the validity of the CMC order.
