Mangalore: Merchants, Workers Slam FDI in Retail, Stage Protest

Mangalore, Nov 23: Mangalore Old Bunder area Merchants and Workers held a protest against the introduction of FDI in Multibrand Retail Trade and demanded the withdrawal of Notification  on November 22 at 10:00 am; a meeting was also held at the KCCI Hall thereafter.

Addressing the protestors, Mohandas Prabhu, Mangalore Old Bunder Area merchants and workers association president said that by the implementation of the FDI, only the Multinational companies will gain profit, and not the general public, or consumers.

UNI Global Union, Switzerland has studied this subject and has already rejected the implementation of FDI in India. As per the FDI norms, 47 billion dollars will be invested on the country by the foreign investors, but the total NRI’s of India send nearly 66 billion dollars.

"Farmers are not benefited by this implementation. In terms of FDI, our nation has taken America, Canada, New Zealand and Australia as a model and is trying to implement this, but as per records, nearly 36% of their total agricultural products are being wasted, which indeed is a big loss to our farmers and our nation", he said,Vasanth Acharya said that the PM is acting as though he has no general knowledge.

"Developmentsneed to be encouraged, but these sort of developments are effecting the farmers and general public or consumers. FDI was earlier stopped in the initial stages, but now again the plans are being made to implement it",stated Mohandas.

Large number of protestors were present.

    When produce move from farmer to consumers how many brokers you need in between. FDI is nothing but avoiding these brokers who make money without any efforts. It is as simple as this. So we need FDI which will help millions of farmers & consumers.

    Either these protestors have absolutely no idea of what is the impact of FDI in retail or are very selfish, they do not want competition to their trade. They want the country to continue what they have been doing for generations!
    Like in Mumbai, some shop keepers opposed the Sky walk projects, because, if the commuters use sky walks, they anticipated that, their business would go down.
    They do not thing of commuters woes!

    Mangalore Old Bunder area agricultural product business should be first shifted to APMC Baikampady. These merchants are apposing to shift to APMC Baikampady as this will stop their tax evasion activities all these years. Now the same mindset is opposing the FDI. FDI should be allowed in Retail which will benifit the common people.

    I need FDI, infact most of us need's FDI... many many people will get job. Benefit for Farmers and to people who are involed in agricultural. NO MORE SUICIDE'S.

    I WELCOME FDI-
    though I'm a businessman too!
    Only Metropolitan cities will see Wallmart like malls.
    Agriculturists will get more for their produce than what they are getting these days due to middlemen & business people exploiting them.
    Small retailer can buy quality products directly at whole sale rates & people won't travel 10 or 50kms to buy the same at the same rates when it is available at their doorstep.
    The Backbone of this country is not middlemen or business tycoons, but agriculturists who need not stock or take their produce to markets & suffer at their hands.
    More storage & procurement means plenty available reducing the rates of final produce as rotting or wastage will be eliminated.
    In Mangalore there are malls selling the same products available in kirana stores, no store has lost business, as consumers know the difference & save fuel & time with personalised service at their doorstep.
    Politicians we won't be FOOLED by you every time, we know which is right & which is wrong, you serve us but we will have the final SAY.
