Mangalore: Preparations to Welcome Sonia Gandhi in Full Swing

Mangalore, Oct 16: Preparations are on in full swing in the city for the arrival of national Congress Sonia Gandhi on Thursday October 18.
As part of Sonia’s visit, the Congress publicity cell of the district launched a publicity vehicle at Nehru Maidan on Tuesday October 16.
The vehicle was flagged off by Mithun Rai, district youth president and by Srinivas, state chief secretary.
Praveen Chandra Alva, Tejaswi, Ivan D’Souza, UB Salim, Girish Shetty, former mayor Azeez, Merril Rego, Michael, Chethan among others were present.
The state intelligence security SP Shivaprasad is looking after the security arrangements at Nehru Maidan and its neighboring areas.
A bomb squad has also arrived and necessary security checks are in progress.
Inspection of routes around the city is also going on. City police commissioner Manish Karbekar also inspected the arrangements and the route.
Traffic restrictions are expected to be in place on the day of the event, however, the exact route has not been announced as yet.
Sonia Gandhi will be participating in the Congress convention to be held at Nehru Maidan on Thursday, and will also be inaugurating the centenary celebrations of Kudroli Temple the same day.
Congress Leaders Inspect Arrangements

On Monday October 15, central and state leaders carried out inspection of the arrangements made to welcome Congress national president Sonia Gandhi.
AICC chief secretary Oscar Fernandes, former union minister B Janardhan Poojari, minister of state for railways K H Muniyappa, AICC secretary Vinay Kumar Sorake, KPCC president Dr G Parameshwar, chief secretary Narayan Rao, M M Nanaiah, DCC president B Ramanath Rai among others inspected the arrangements.
Speaking to the reporters, Dr G Parameshwar said that Sonia Gandhi will arrive at Bajpe Airport at 4 pm on October 18. She will address a public meeting at Nehru Maidan at 4.30 pm and will later inaugurate the centenary programme of Kudroli Kshetra.
Representatives from Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts will take part in the programme at Nehru Maidan. Nearly 20,000 people are expected to gather for the event, he said.
MLAs Abhayachandra Jain, U T Khader, KPCC secretary K P Nanjundi, Hussein, Ivan D’Souza, Mohammed Badruddin, leaders G A Bava, P V Mohan, B Ibrahim, Shashidhar Hegde, Naveen D’Souza, Vijay Kumar Shetty, J R Lobo, Kripa Alva, T K Sudhir, Ashraf among others were present.
Prior to Sonia’s visit, central SPG (special protection group) arrived in city and scrutinized the venue.
District officials and police officers too were present on the occasion.
