Sensex Closes 20 Points up


New Delhi, Sep 25 (IANS): A benchmark index of Indian equities markets closed 20 points up Tuesday with realty, FMCG and consumer durable stocks the best performers.

The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 18,708.01 points, closed at 18,693.67 points (provisional), 20.33 points or 0.11 percent up from its previous day's close at 18,673.34 points.

The Sensex touched a high of 18,790.01 points and a low of 18,636.16 points in intra-day trade.

The wider 50-scrip S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange closed 0.13 percent down at 5,676.75 points.

On the sectoral front, the BSE realty index was up 42.37 points, FMCG index was up 111.36 points and consumer durable index was up 57.36 points.

Major Sensex gainers were BHEL, up 3.09 percent at Rs.254.85; ITC, up 2.07 percent at Rs.261.05; Hindustan Unilever, up 2.01 percent at Rs.528.50; Cipla, up 1.92 percent at Rs.362.95; HDFC, up 0.99 percent at Rs.767; and Mahindra and Mahindra, up 0.88 percent at Rs.845.05.

Major Sensex losers were Jindal Steel, down 5.05 percent at Rs.422; Sterlite Inds, down 2.46 percent at Rs.101.20; Tata Motors, down 1.70 percent at Rs.268.75; Maruti Suzuki, down 1.69 percent at Rs.1,330.95; and Tata Steel, down 1.57 percent at Rs.400.25.
